Startups born out of Google and Facebook:

(Observer (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TWITTER Evan Williams sold his company Blogger to Google in 2003, then created Odeo, a podcasting company that went through various incarnations before launching Twitter in 2006. The micro-blogging site's value is now estimated at $10bn.


AARDVARK Founded by former Google employees Max Ventilla and Nathan Stoll, along with Perspecta co-founder Damon Horowitz, Aardvark is a social search service that lets users submit questions to their extended social network. The company was sold to Google for $50m in 2010.

FOURSQUARE Dennis Crowley sold Dodgeball, a social start-up website that told your friends what you were doing, to Google in 2005, then left to start Foursquare, a mobile app with the same purpose, which is now valued at $100m.

FRIENDFEED Paul Buchheit, the man behind Gmail and Google's famous 'don't be evil' slogan, left along with Jim Norris, Sanjeev Singh and Bret Taylor to set up Twitter rival Friendfeed, which they sold to Facebook for $50m in 2009.

INSTAGRAM Kevin Systrom helped launch Twitter, then went to Google for three years, before leaving to launch Instagram, a photo-sharing app that Google is rumoured to be interested in.

IMAGESHACK Founded by Jack Levin after five years at Google, ImageShack's most successful product is yfrog, a Twitter photo-sharing app now earning millions of dollars in ad revenue.

CHAI LABS The 'godfather' of Google's cash cow AdSense, Gokul Rajaram left to found Chai Labs, which was sold to Facebook for $10m before it was clear what it did, suggesting the acquisition was more about Facebook acquiring Rajaram.

ASANA Set up by Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz after he left the social networking behemoth that made him the world's youngest billionaire, Asana is a software company focused on making collaborations for businesses simpler.

PATH.COM Napster's Shawn Fanning and ex-Facebook executive Dave Morin founded this 'personal' social network service, that lets users tag and share photos with up to 50 friends.

JUMO A non-profit social network service launched by Facebook founder Chris Hughes, who was director of online organising for Barack Obama's presidential campaign, Jumo aims to connect millions of activists working to "change the world".

TRIALPAY Eddie Lim, ex-Facebook product designer, is the chief technology officer for this "transactional advertising" firm, which gives its 80 million users access to free software in return for participation in marketing strategies (online adverts).

I2WE Founded by Facebook software engineer Karel Baloun, i2We is a social networking company with over 2 million members, which offers custom application development for Facebook, focusing on building communities with a shared interest.
